Lovejoy is hired by Ronald Field to investigate the disappearance of two flintlock pistols. They had been owned by the brother of Ronald Field, and were stolen at the time he was murdered. The pistols appear to be the Judas Pair, the thirteenth pair of pistols made by a famous regency gunsmith. Twelve pairs are known, the thirteenth is believed in the trade to be a myth.

Ronald Field’s home is burgled just after Lovejoy is hired. He works out that there must be something missing from the pistols. Fortunately the thief was unlucky. Ronald Field’s possessions went to the auction house the previous day. Lovejoy attends the auction to see if he can find out anybody wanting to buy the lots. He has no luck, but realises on the way home that the screwdriver in a medical set is actually the screw for the flintlock pistols. He breaks into Gimbert’s saleroom and retrieves the screw. He hides it in the cellar of a cvottage Lady Jane is renovating.

The thief obviously knows Lovejoy has the screw, because he ransacks Lovejoy’s house and nearly strangles Lady Jane to death in the cottage she is doing up. He doesn’t get the screw, but does come back that night and attacks Lovejoy and Lady Jane with a crossbow. The crossbow doesn’t force them out of the cottage, so the thief sets fire to the thatch. Fortunately Lovejoy and Lady Jane hide in the priest hole in the cellar and await the fire brigade.

Lovejoy works out that the thief is the man that sold Ronald Field the pistols, a Dr La Grange. La Grange is staying with Mrs Field and Lovejoy goes to Mrs Field’s house to confront him. La Grange challenges Lovejoy to a duel with the pistols. Lovejoy accepts, but defuses the situation by turning his pistol sideways and firing it.

The pistols fire backwards. Ronald Field was found dead, shot in the eye, because the pistols fired backwards. At the police station Lovejoy undoes one of the pistols and finds a maker’s statement to the effect that the king made him do it. The Judas pair had been made for the Regent to fight a dirty duel.
