Lovejoy examines the estate of the late Mr Becson. He finds that he was an accomplished forger. Further, he works out that the late Mr Becson was trying to say something through his drawings and diaries. This is confirmed when two supposed Canadian relatives come looking for his effects.

Two Roman coins, donated to the local museum by Mr Becson, are stolen in the night, Lovejoy’s house is burgled and fellow dealer Dandy Jack is attacked and robbed of two of Mr Becson’s drawings. The Canadian pair are obviously involved.

Mr Becson’s beneficiary is is ex housekeeper, Mrs Springer. Lovejoy goes to the Isle of Man to see her. She tells him that Mr Becson had found evidence of Roman occupation in the Isle Of Man, but academics had scoffed at his claim. Lovejoy starts to investigate further, but is ambushed by one of the Canadians. The other Canadian rescues Lovejoy, but double crosses him after Lovejoy finds the treasure. He manages to overpower her and removes the treasure. Lovejoy benefits from the treasure trove.
