The former sheriff's house and jail are located on the green on the northwest side of Market Street and was built in 1857. The Victorian inspired building was designed by Samuel Sloan. The facade of the building is constructed of dressed brownstone. The building is a five-bay center door building with projecting center pavilion that is topped by a triangular pediment and a modillion cornice.

The building is in good condition and is part of the the First State National Monument.
