This is the dome of the Washington State Capitol, also known as the Legislative Building. It measures 80 feet in diameter; the structure is brick masonry, faced with cut stones. It is similar in design to St. Paul's Cathedral in London.
The building required six years to complete, opening in 1928 at a cost of $6.8 million plus an additional $600,000 for interior furnishings. At 278 feet, the dome is the tallest in North America and 4th tallest masonry dome in the world, behind only
St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome,
St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and
St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.
Hanging from the center of the dome is a five-ton bronze chandelier, known as Angels of Mercy. It was made by the Tiffany company and measures 25 feet long, 8 feet in diameter, and is suspended on a 101-foot chain.
