DE:

EN:
The cathedral was built in the eleventh century in place of the collegiate church "St. Cassius und Florentius", which was built before by the Cassius-Stift and teared down about 1050. Hence, it was one of the first big churches of the Rhineland.

It's architecture is a cross-basilica with three wings in Romanic style. However, inside baroque elements from the 17th and 18th century predominate, like the two altars made from marble or the bronze statue of Holy Helena.

Furthermore, the cloister behind the church is worth seeing as well as the crypt and the tombs, where the remains of Cassius and Florentius are told to have laid. Two giant granite heads (WMM4QJ) outside of the church still remind of these two martyrs. Also, the "Martinsbrunnen" (WMM2X6) as well as the pillory in front of the main entrance belong to the cathedral.
