The monument is a red, granite slab with Sheriff Kuebel's badge depicted at the top, with the following text in a box below:

Placed here in memory of Sheriff Douglas Wm. Kuebel, Badge #705, by friends. Sheriff Kuebel was killed in the line of duty September 28, 1971. He is remembered by young and old alike as more than a peace officer, as a friend, and a tireless servant of the people of Kendall County.

The Officer Down Memorial Project has some information about the incident that cost him his life:

Sheriff Kuebel was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance where a man was threatening to kill his wife and family. Sheriff Kuebel was attempting to talk the man into putting down his shotgun when the man suddenly opened fire. Sheriff Kuebel was struck by the shotgun blast and killed. The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Sheriff Kuebel had served as sheriff for 17 years and was survived by his wife.

An obituary from ancestry.com elaborated with some complementary information: (visit link)

Menn, who was 21 years old, was convicted of murder and received life in prison. Kuebel was 61 years old at the time of his death. Kuebel served as Sheriff from 1954 to 1957.
