Son nom à la naissance est Conrad Kirouac, mais il est connu comme frère Marie Victorin, nom qu’il a choisi quand il est devenu frère des Écoles Chrétiennes. Il est né à Kingsey Falls, en Estrie, le 3 avril 1885.
Marie Victorin enseigne d'abord à Saint-Jérôme, mais la maladie le force à quitter son poste d’enseignant et il commence à observer et à étudier les plantes. Ses premiers ouvrages sont Croquis laurentiens et les Récits laurentiens.
Plus tard, frère Marie Victorin commence à enseigner au collège de Longueuil, poste qu'il occupe jusqu’à son décès. En 1920, il est nommé professeur de botanique à l'Université de Montréal. Deux ans plus tard, il est docteur en sciences et professeur titulaire de l’université.
C’est lui qui fonde l'Institut botanique et entreprend le premier inventaire des fleurs du Québec. Le fruit de ses recherches voit le jour sous le titre de La Flore laurentienne.
Marie Victorin collabore à la fondation de l'Association canadienne-française pour l'avancement des sciences (ACFAS). Plusieurs décorations lui furent décernées pour son oeuvre littéraire et scientifique. Il participa également à plusieurs congrès scientifiques.
Ses réalisations les plus importantes sont le Jardin de l'Institut botanique de l'Université de Montréal, en 1920, et le Jardin Botanique de Montréal, en 1931, quand il convainc le Comité Exécutif de la Ville de Montréal de réaliser ce rêve. Il s'y dévoua jusqu'au 15 juillet 1944, année de son décès à la suite d’un accident de voiture.

Born in 1885, Conrad Kirouac is better known to the public as Brother Marie-Victorin. This brother of the Christian Schools and avid botanist was the author "La Flore Laurentienne,” a book published in 1935 which is still considered a major reference on plant life in Québec. A tireless worker, he was in charge of the Botany Laboratory (which later became the Botanical Institute of the Université de Montréal), founded the French Canadian Association for the Advancement of Sciences in 1923 and became secretary general of the Canadian Society of Natural History in 1925.
His plea to Mayor Camillien Houde in 1935 for the creation of a botanical garden went down in Montréal’s history:
“We will soon be celebrating Montréal's three hundredth anniversary. You need to give a gift, a royal gift, to the City, our city. But Montréal is Ville-Marie, a woman... And you certainly can't give her a storm sewer or a police station... It's obvious what you must do! Give her a corsage for her lapel. Fill her arms to overflowing with all the roses and lilies of the field!”
In keeping with his teaching vocation, Brother Marie-Victorin made sure that the Garden had an educational and scientific mission. In 1938, the School of Horticultural Learning opened and garden plots for pupils were created. The next year, the School of Awakening, an innovative institution whose aim was to introduce young people to nature, opened in the Garden. In 1943, he developed a formal collaboration between the Garden and the Botanical Institute of the Université de Montréal, but the project was suspended in summer 1944 due to his accidental death.
