An information board erected by the Fairburn and District Historical Society has the following details.
THE VILLAGE GAOL

WHAT DID FAIRBURNERS DO WITH THE VILLAGE
TROUBLEMAKERS 100 YEARS AGO?

A rowdy reveller might expect a night in
this village lock up to sober up. The
unfortunate reveller could be imprisoned
in this 8ft x 6ft cell with only a stone
bench to lie on. Prisoners were also held
there before attending the local
Magistrates' court.

The gaol which is hewn out of this
limestone crag was last used at the
beginning of the 20th century.

The door which you can see is based on
the original oak batten style door which
would have been used. The steel diamond
studs and straps were salvaged from the
old doors from Fairburn church.

In the window you can see the
original bars.
