When Route 66 was de-commissioned in 1985, the Interstate opened, Route 66 was chopped into shorter segments, by the new Highway passing through in a straight line. This is one of those places, to get access to 'Dirt 66' they built an underpass.

There are two narrow tunnels where the old Route 66 turns under the Interstate I-40. When you see the both roads together it makes you think, why stay on this slow, dusty, narrow, twisty road, past ghost towns. When you could be on a fast, smooth, flat, super highway, with modern service stations.
Yes, why spend 23 days covering over 100 miles per day, on the Mother Road, when you can drive from Chicago to California in 2 days using the Interstate (Motorway)
Then you remember 'its not the destination, but the journey'
You can then say 'I drove Historic Route 66'.
