George Clifford was born at Brougham Castle, but spent much of his time at court. He was a good jouster and became Queen Elizabeth’s second champion. He received the Knight of the Garter in 1592. He was an accompished sailor and won many naval battles in the Caribbean.
His tomb in Holy Trinity church is adorned with several arms of the Clifford family. Along the side of the tomb, from left to right are the arms of
Clifford and Warwick, Clifford & Ross, Clifford Order of the Garter, Clifford between Brandon & Dacre, Clifford & Vesci.
On the end of the tomb are the arms of
Clifford & Berkley, Clifford & Nevill
