This windmill farm straddles Highway 5, just west of Range Road 225, about 8 km. southwest of Magrath, AB. It probably produces about 35 to 40 megawatts of electricity. It is one of dozens of wind farms in southern Alberta installed since 1993. The total installed capacity, as of December, 2013, was 752 turbines with a capacity of 1,120.3 MW. This farm is operated by Acciona, Enbridge and Suncor Energy.
Coordinates are not for a single windmill, but at the viewpoint.
They list the farm as having 20 windmills. I suspect that four have been added since the last update of their web page.
Magrath Wind Power Project
Location: 40 kilometers south of Lethbridge, Alberta
Completion date: 2004
Wind power: 30 MW capacity, using 20 GE 1.5 MW wind turbine generators
Projected CO2 emissions avoided: Approximately 97,000 tons annually
Partners: Suncor Energy Products, Inc., Enbridge Income Fund
Local tidbit: This area is one of the sunniest and warmest cities in Canada with close to 2,400 hours of sunshine per year. It is also the frequent beneficiary of a phenomenon called the chinook, a warm west wind providing above freezing breaks throughout the winter season.
Power generation
The Magrath Wind Power Project produces enough electricity for approximately 10,000 homes. Project partner Enbridge has contracted to purchase one-third of the project’s power output for its pipeline system. The remainder is sold to consumers through Alberta’s electricity grid.
