This station, a U.S.Coast and Geodetic Survey standard bench mark disk, is located in Highland, NY. It is set in a concrete abutment of a former railroad bridge. The original NGS datasheet description is as follows:

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1941 AT HIGHLAND.
AT HIGHLAND, ULSTER COUNTY, 129 FEET NORTH OF THE NORTH SIDE
OF THE NEW YORK, NEW HAVEN AND HARTFORD RAILROAD STATION, AT
BRIDGE 113.74 OVER U.S. HIGHWAY 44, IN THE EAST CORNER OF THE
SOUTH ABUTMENT, 2.3 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE NORTHEAST END, 1.1
FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE NORTHWEST EDGE, 9.3 FEET EAST OF THE
EAST RAIL OF THE EAST TRACK, AND ABOUT 1 FOOT LOWER THAN THE
TRACK. A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED D 144 1941.

Quick history since this description: This location is on the former Maybrook line of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. This section of the railroad was abandoned in 1974 after the railroad bridge over the Hudson River caught fire. Since then, the train station here was closed, the rails were taken up, and in the mid-1980s, the bridge here (at mile 113.74) was dismantled, girders and all, leaving just the abutments. Thirty plus years later, through funding from federal, state and local groups, the former Maybrook line has been converted to the Hudson Valley Rail Trail. and the fire damaged bridge over the Hudson River became the Walkway Over the Hudson, connecting the west trail to the east trail, known as the Dutchess County Rail Trail. Since all this change took place, our dismantled bridge here was fitted with a new iron truss foot bridge to carry the trail over Vineyard Avenue (U.S. Rt. 44 and NY Rt. 55).

With the rail trail in place, the mark is clearly visible from the foot bridge, while you are heading north and looking east on the trail (compass wise). Access to the mark is safe and simple. Walk around to the other side of the wooden fence ahead of the bridge, and head straight to the old abutment and the mark.

This mark is also loggable at the Geocaching site. Please consider logging your visit at both sites. Thank you.
