The railroad has been an important commercial link for Staunton since well before the Civil War and was an important military asset during that conflict. The main passenger terminal of the Staunton train station was originally built in 1852 and modernized in 1902. Today a portion of the station is still in use for AMTRAK passenger service. The terminal building has been converted into a restaurant, The Pullman. Another part of the station houses another restaruant, The Depot.
Nearby buildings of Staunton's Wharf area have been restored and today house a variety of shops and restaurants. It is an interesting area to visit to observe the architecture and history of this train station.
