John Forrest was born in Bunbury , south of Perth, in 1847. when he left school he studied surveying and led several expeditions into remote parts of W.A.. In 1882, He was made a Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) by Queen Victoria for his services in exploring, and in 1890 became the first native-born Australian to be made a baron . When responsible government was granted in 1890 he was elected as the member for Bunbury in the first legislative assembly, becoming the first Premier of Western Australia, a role he held for the next ten years, during which time he was responsible for the construction of Fremantle Harbour and the Goldfields Water Supply pipeline. In 1899 he gave women the right to vote
After the opening of the Federal Parliament he served from 1901 til his death in 1918 as Federal Treasurer and Minister for Defence
He died en route to England whilst his ship was docked off Sierra Leone and his remains were temporarily interred there until being exhumed and returned to Australia to be buried in Karrakatta Cemetery
