Depicted marble memorial tablet, devoted to mathematician and physicist Christian Doppler, you can find on the southern facade of the Prague City Court building in Charles Square (Karlovo námestí).

The marble band on the facade bears following inscription in Czech:

V dome c.p. 4-II. který stával na tomto míste žil a bádal pred uverejnením svého
svetoznámého principu (1842) na nemž buduje dnešní astrofysika vehlasný ucenec
= KRISTIAN DOPPLER =
profesor mathematiky a a praktické geometrie na Technice v Praze.
Narodil se r. 1803 v Solnohrade a zemrel r. 1854 v Benátkách.

Translation to English:

In house N° 4-II., which was standing on this site, lived and researched before publishig of his world-wide known principle (1842) which is cornerstone of contemporary astrophysics, famous scientist
= CHRISTIAN DOPPLER =
professor of mathematics and practical geometry at the Prague Polytechnic.
Born in 1803 in Salzburg, died 1854 in Venice.

Christian Doppler (29 November 1803 – 17 March 1854) was raised in Salzburg, Austria, the son of a stonemason. Doppler could not work in his father's business because of his generally weak physical condition. After completing high school Doppler studied philosophy in Salzburg and mathematics and physics at the k. k. Polytechnisches Institut (now Vienna University of Technology) where he began work as an assistant in 1829. In 1835 started to work at the Prague Polytechnic (now Czech Technical University), where he was appointed in 1841.

Only a year later, at the age of 38, Doppler gave a lecture to the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences and subsequently published his most notable work, "Über das farbige Licht der Doppelsterne und einiger anderer Gestirne des Himmels" (On the coloured light of the binary stars and some other stars of the heavens). There is a facsimile edition with an English translation by Alec Eden. In this work, Doppler postulated his principle (later coined the Doppler effect) that the observed frequency of a wave depends on the relative speed of the source and the observer, and he tried to use this concept for explaining the colour of binary stars. In Doppler's time in Prague as a professor he published over 50 articles on mathematics, physics and astronomy. In 1847 he left Prague for the professorship of mathematics, physics, and mechanics at the Academy of Mines and Forests (its successor is the present day University of Miskolc) in Selmecbánya (then Kingdom of Hungary, now Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia), and in 1849 he moved to Vienna.
