The GILPIN HOUSE, 210 Delaware St., now a tailor shop and store, is one of the town's oldest buildings. A broad arched driveway through it to the garden and stables in the rear and other rare architectural details have been destroyed by remodeling. In 1797, it was the "McCullough Tavern"; in 1802, the "Arms of the United States"; in 1804, "Darragh Tavern." It continued as a hotel frequented by court attendants until recent years. The name is from Edward W. Gilpin, Chief Justice from 1857 to 1876, who lived here during that time. - Delaware: A Guide to the First State, 1938, pg 247.
The building is much as described in the Guide. The building is now a branch bank office and residential apartments above.
