Cohasset Common was called the "The Plain" formed by the land between the marshes of Great Neck and the adjacent meadow. Part of Main St was originally a cow path marked out in 1685. Cohasset became a town in 1770. The residents gained independence from Hingham both in church and school. The First Meeting House was built in 1714 on the Common. Common land was never transferred to private ownership with activities such as public meetings, churches, militia assembled and trained here, early schools were built and people built there homes around the perimeter.
