Francis Evans Cornish
Winnipeg's First Mayor-1874

Francis Evans Cornish was one of Winnipeg's most colourful characters. Born into one of London, Ontario's most prominent families, Francis Evans graduated from law school at 21 years of age. He quickly earned a reputation as a clever competent lawyer, and was appointed Queens Council at the age of 26 which was considered a remarkable achievement. His passion for law soon was shared by his growing interest in politics. He was elected Mayor of London in 1867. After serving a four-year term, Francis headed west to Winnipeg after losing the London election in 1871.

Cornish craved and captured the attention of the public. He became an overnight sensation after his involvement with trials surrounding friends and supporters of Louis Riel. Cornish was elected the first Mayor of Winnipeg and assumed that position in 1874. Although only spending six years in political life in Winnipeg, Cornish Won great recognition and respect from his peers and enemies alike.

The man known as "King", not only practiced coercion and corruption but he did it with great humility. Cornish an eccentric man whose antics often overshadowed his intelligence and brilliance. Cornish passed away on November 28, 1878. His death was mourned by friend and by foe.
