The American River Water Education Center is a facility that teaches water conservation. Related to water use, the Center features a garden that is designed with three goals in mind: 1. Attract butterflies, 2. Attract birds, and 3. Provide education about plants that require little water.
The garden includes a pathway with plants labeled and a card showing whether birds or butterflies, or both, are attracted to the plant. The Garden provides educational services to local schools and groups. It is run by the US Bureau of Reclamation. There is no entry fee. You must call the center in order to arrange for a group tour.
This is a truly interesting and educational attraction. The Center features organized tours but individuals can go to enjoy the garden and the plants without a reservation. For more information see their web site: (
