Sophie Jackson has Alzheimers disease and crashes her car in Aidensfield. In a separate incident Sophie goes shoplifting in Mr Malloy’s shop. Her husband Barry says he will make things right with the people concerned, however he starts getting hate mail saying that his wife should be committed.
A few days later grafitti is sprayed on the wall of the Jackson’s house. The following evening it is the school concert and Barry Jackson is leading the school orchestra. During the concert the Jackson’s house is burnt down in an arson attack. Sophie is found dead in the ruins.
After the fire officers have declared the fire arson, Rowan follows a hunch. He types a hate note on Sophie’s typewriter and confronts Barry with it. Barry confesses to a mercy killing.
Meanwhile a Malcolm Brown checks into the Aidensfield Arms with his daughter. The daughter seems distressed and Gina is sufficiently concerned to raise the matter with Nick Rowan. Ventriss does a search and finds that Malcolm Brown is on the run from prison. After a car chase across the moors Brown is caught. He went on the run after the death of his wife in a car accident.
