"Stephen Fuller Austin (November 3, 1793 – December 27, 1836) was an American empresario born in Virginia and raised in southeastern Missouri. He was known as the Father of Texas, led the second, but first legal and ultimately successful colonization of the region by bringing 300 families from the United States. The capital of Texas, Austin in Travis County, Austin County, Austin Bayou, Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Austin College in Sherman, and a number of K-12 schools are named in his honor."


The statue stands on top of his grave prominently located on Republic Hill at the Texas State Cemetery, Austin, Texas. It is a full-length portrait of Stephen F. Austin shown standing, clothed in a suit with vest and coat, a caped cloak fastened about his neck. His proper right hand is raised and extended out with palm down. The heel of his proper left hand rests on what appears to be a tree stump, and in his fingers he clutches a half unrolled scroll of paper, which at the bottom left corner reads: TEXAS/1834. The sculpture sits atop a tiered stone pillar, which flares out toward the bottom. On the lower portions of the pillar, beneath inscriptions, is a seal in honor of service in the War of 1812.
