Dieter Lotschmeyer comes to Aidensfield to visit his father’s grave. Dieter’s father was a bomber pilot and tried to lighten his load over Aidensfield, killing the Tyler family in the process. There is local resentment, culminating in the desecration of the grave.
Meanwhile, Walter and Hilda Openshaw come for their annual hiking holiday in Aidensfield. Walter is a drinking pal of Greengrass and would rather be on the Orient Express. In a drunken stupor Greengrass grants Walter’s wish when they steal a train from the station.
