PC Phil Bellamy called on a young woman whilst on his beat. Unfortunately, whilst he was visiting, a pawnbrokers opposite was burgled. Things get worse for Bellamy when a tip off tells police that the goods are in a lock up rented by Bellamy.
Nick believes in Bellamy’s innocence. He discovers that the plot to discredit Bellamy is instigated by a man called Jack Scarman. Further, the girl Bellamy was seeing was Scarman’s girlfriend. The woman confirms Bellamy’s story and Scarman is arrested.
As a sub plot Greengrass is involved with Scarman over a greyhound. Greengrass has found a fast greyhound that is a dead ringer for Scarman’s slower dog.
