Born on November 13th, 1842, Amaretta Mason passed away on April 10th, 1895, at the age of 52. Amaretta's husband was apparently the proprietor of a mercantile store in Philipsburg.
Amaretta's headstone, approximately six feet in height, rests on a low stone plinth. It has a large stone-like base and large overhanging capital with a large urn atop. Generally square in form, it has rough stone emulation throughout and decorative plaques on all four sides.
The Philipsburg Cemetery was begun around 1870, shortly after the time the town was registered, and to date has about 3,475 interments. It is the resting place of a good many miners and prospectors from the area who died as a result of falls, explosions and other mishaps in the mining industry, in both the 19th and 20th centuries.
