The mill operated from 1865 until 1976, and has now been replaced with a housing estate. The sign stands at the entrance to the estate alongside the original large metal name plate from the building.
The sign shows a picture of the mill with some of the workers in the grounds. There is also an extract of an old map showing the mill's location.

This sign was originally on the side of the building pictured above and marks the site of the Goyt Mill dating from 1865. Goyt Mill was the largest one room weaving mill in England and employed over 300 people, adults and children, often working day and night. In the 1870s the textile industry which powered Britain's economy at the time employed 28% of the population in Whaley Bridge and the town had much more of a mill town character than it has today. The mill continued to operate until 1976.
