Find the coordinates on the monument marking the Equator. Due to some miscalculations 268 years ago, the surveyors were about 30 metres off. Based on my lack of breath, I can only assume the altitude here at 1.5 miles above sea level is correct!

The elevation here makes Quito the second highest capital in the world. It is second to La Paz, Bolivia but ahead of the likes of Thimphu, Bhutan; Bogota, Colombia; and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Equator was discovered and mapped out in 1736 by a French geodesic expedition team led by Charles-Marie de La Comdamine. Even though those early geographers were about 250 meters off the mark, it was an extraordinary feat at the time.
