The Cowichan Bay Fire Department was started in 1947 and was stationed out of a local gas station at Cowichan Bay Road and Wilmot Road.

In 1963, the members of the fire department realized that they needed a permanent facility, thus they created the Cowichan Bay District Fire Society and started to raise funds for a new facility to house the growing department. On Saturday March 13th, 1963, the Cowichan Bay Fire Hall (the subject of this Waymark) was officially opened by Mrs. Myrna Ricketts, who was the president of the Cowichan Bay Ladies Auxiliary. This new hall, which was only 50' by 30', was placed at the corner of Wilmot Road and Pavenham Road and gave 4-way access to anywhere in the protection district.

In the 1970s, when it was becoming clear that this fire hall was too small to house the growing fire department, a campaign for a new hall was initiated. In 1979, the fire department moved into their current hall (WMHXP0), vacating the building in this Waymark.

The former fire hall now houses the offices of the Cowichan Bay Waterworks District. Its former history is recognized by a sign identifying the building as "The Old Firehall".
