Fort Missoula, for nearly a century a military fort, is now a National Historic Place and park. In the park are a few of the pre 20th century buildings from the original 1877 fort and many buildings from the early 1900s. They have an eclectic collection of large artefacts, including machinery and tractors, a lookout tower, railroad engine and cars, a tipi burner, the old Drummond, MT RR station, an old school and an old mission, artillery and a historical museum. It's a great place to spend an afternoon or a whole day.
Outside, beside the long pole shed toward the rear of the machinery area are a couple of middle aged Cats. This smaller sized Cat is one. The nameplate indicates that it is a D series, but not which D. Given that it has a four cylinder Diesel with electric start, it could be either a D2 or a D4. The style makes one want to believe it is a D4. The D4 had a 5.1 Litre four cylinder engine of about belt 58 HP and a five speed transmission with only one reverse speed. Top Speed was 5.4 MPH. Without blade or ROPS it weighed just over 10,000 lbs.
This one is about to undergo restoration. They have it partially torn down, with a pile of parts laying beside it.
