The obelisk honours one of the prominent businessmen of early Anaconda, one Augustin P. Cloutier, and his wife, Victoria. A.P. was born February 19, 1952 and passed away on January 31, 1906. Victoria, whose birth date is unknown, passed away on September 23, 1891.
Augustin P. Cloutier was a partner in the MacCallum and Cloutier Mercantile Company which was opened in 1887 by A.C. MacCallum, Charles A. MacCallum, and Augustin P. Cloutier and incorporated in 1902. It was later merged into the Hennessy Company as a result of receivership. The MacCallums and Cloutier had come from Montréal Canada. French-Canadian millwrights had come to build the Anaconda Copper Smelter and the mercantile served the French speaking community. Though there was a lot of competition in Anaconda at the time, the MacCallum and Cloutier Mercantile Company remained in business until 1941.
