"The town of Mayfield dares back to 1853, when "Uncle Jim's Cabin," a tavern and stagecoach stop, opened at the southeast corner of what is currently California Avenue and El Camino Real. By 1855, the town of Mayfield was established and soon had a post office, a railroad station, stores, saloons, and a school. In 1866, William Page, for whom Page Mill Road is named, opened his Mayfield lumber business. The town site was platted in 1867, and a brewery was built in 1868. It was a bustling and prosperous town through the 1890's.
In the founding days of Stanford University, Senator Leland Stanford saw the need for a town to support the fledgling university. He wanted Mayfield to be that town, but Mayfield's many saloons were considered inappropriate for a university town. Stanford's request to close the saloons was rejected, leading the Senator to encourage the formation of Palo Alto as a town where no alcohol could be sold. Palo Alto was incorporated in 1894. As Palo Alto began to grow, Mayfield's economic fortunes declined. In 1925, Mayfield's citizens voted to be annexed by Palo Alto. "
