"Stanford profesor Frederick Terman inspired many young engineering students including Bill Hewlett and David Packard. In 1939, the newly formed Hewlett-Packaid Company outgrew the garage at 367 Addison Avenue and rented shop space diagonally across from these playing fields at 481 Rage Mill Road. Their first product, the audio oscillator, was a success and the company set the stage for the technology boom in the Santa Clara Valley. Meanwhile in the Stanford Physics Department, the Varian Brothers began work on the klystron, a specialized vacuum tube important to radar. In 1953, Varian Associates became the first tenant of what is now Stanford Research Park, locating at 611 Hansen Way."
