A very typical NFS Campground along a pretty tame section of the American River up on Chinook Pass. Where did the name come from? What is so hellish?

Why this peacefull spot got the name "Hell's Crossing" is beyond me. In the shot you'll see a lot of fallen trees across the river, but that's pretty typical for NW rivers. The campground is a peaceful place set next to the American River.
