The first railway station of Aarau opened in 1859, three years after the railway line. In these three years a temporary wooden structure was used.
The station was operated by NOB, but the connection to Olten, operated by SCB opened two weeks before the inauguration of the NOB connection to Brugg. In 1874 Aargauische Südbahn added a connection to Lenzburg, and in 1877 The line to Suhr, operated by SNB. Two narrow gauge lines have their own station building just south of the station area.
In 2008 the old station was dismantled and completely rebuild until 2010. The new building also contains several shops and restaurants. The clock clock on the northern facade is the second largest in Europe.
Today the station is operated by SBB. About 65,000 people use the station on an average day.
Aarau is a stop of Intercity and Interregio trains to and from Zürich, Basel, Bern, Biel. There are RegioExpress trains to Olten, Brugg and Zürich. Then Aarau is the focal point of the Aargau S-Bahn network with three regional lines and the final destination of one line of the Zürch S-Bahn network.
