The village of Silver City was established in the 1870s. It was a major stop on the Chisholm Trail because of the good grazing land around the Canadian River, and the three small creeks which supplied good water. Then, in 1890 the Rock Island Railroad brought its tracks to the south side of the river and the new town of Minco sprung up. Most of Silver City’s inhabitants moved to Minco and Silver City died out.

A post office was in operation in the town from May of 1883 to June of 1890. The only remaining feature of this ghost town is Silver City Cemetery at these coordinates. This cemetery was established in 1876 with the burial of William Ward, a cowboy on the Trail, who died in a gunfight. The actual site of the town is located somewhere in the farmland near this cemetery.
