Messing is a small rural village to the north of Tiptree in Essex, the church is dedicated to All Saints and was built in the C13th. The tower was built c1840, is of three tiers in red brick with stone dressings and buttresses.

The cut-mark is on the outward facing face of the north-west diagonal buttress, is 46.619m above Newlyn datum, was last verified in 1962, and is 0.400m above ground level. Only slightly damaged by weathering there is a quantity of lichen on the stonework around.
