Otterville Grave site across the street This site has been placed on Illinois ten most Endangered Historic Places list Built in 1835, the Hamilton Primary School was the first free and integrated school in the United States. A monument to Dr. Hamilton, the visionary benefactor of the school, is located at the site. It was dedicated by George Washington, a former slave who was freed by his master, the same Dr. Hamilton.

School Renovations page please add we are needing funds to maintain the roof. It needs repainted.
Electric upgraded in 2011
The Otter Creek Historical Society, Inc. is in the process of renovating the building.
The roof was replaced in 2001, with tuck- pointing completed in 2003. The windows were repaired and painted on the exterior in 2004. All of this done at a price tag of $115,526.00.
A much needed septic system and bathroom on the main floor have been installed in 2005.
Interior repair and restoration will soon begin.
