Pascoe is detailed to protect Barney Winkler, a writer on the cold war, who is in danger from ex Stasi members. Dalziel meanwhile has received a postcard from an old flame, Florie Stockton, and is meeting her at her hotel in Scarborough.
Over a short period of time several suspicious deaths occur. The first is a French art dealer who falls from a motorway bridge, the second is a Russian washed up on Whitby beach, the third is a Chinese student stabbed at a beauty spot. The deceased are all ex husbands of Florrie. Dalziel suspects that the deaths are related to espionage, but might be linked to the university.
