Henry Bacon is an architect that is best known for his design of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D. C. Bacon was born on November 28, 1866 in Watseka, Illinois and early in his career designed such well known buildings as the Boston and New York Public Library, the Harvard Club in New York and Penn Station. He also contributed to the design of the Court of Four Seasons for the Pan-Pacific Exposition in 1915. But he is best remembered for his design of the Lincoln Memorial which stands on the National Mall in Washington, D. C. Bacon’s design in the form of a Greek Doric temple and includes a large sculpture of Lincoln by Daniel Chester French and inscriptions of two of Lincoln’s more famous speeches, The Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address. The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in 1922 with Bacon present. Henry Bacon died on February 27, 1924 and is buried in the Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Henry Bacon was born on November 28, 1866 in Watseka, Illinois. In 1884 he embarked on his career as an architect taking a job at McKim, Mead & White, which was one of the best known architectural firms in the United States. He worked with his mentor Charles McKim on projects including the Rhode Island State House. Some of Bacon’s more well-known designs include the Boston and New York Public Library, New York Harvard Club and Penn Station in New York. Later in his career is contributed designs for the Court of Four Seasons at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915, the Danforth Library in Patterson, New York and the World War I Memorial at Yale University. Bacon is best known for his last project, the design of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D. C. which was built from 1915-1922. In 1923, President Warren Harding presented Bacon with the American Institute of Architect’s Gold Medal. In 1942 a United States Navy Liberty Ship was commissioned and named the SS Henry Bacon. Henry Bacon died on February 17, 1924 and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington, North Carolina.
