David Brinkley was the award winning newscaster for NBC News from 1956-1981 and for ABC News from 1981-1997. IN 1956 NBC News paired him with Chet Huntley and the two anchored the evening news broadcast that was known as “The Huntley-Brinkley Report.” With Huntley anchoring in New York, and Brinkley from Washington, the pair was so successful that they remained on the air until Huntley retired in 1970. The program was renamed “The NBC Nightly News.” Brinkley remained at NBC until 1981 when he moved to ABC News and anchored the Sunday Morning News Program, “This Week with David Brinkley.” David Brinkley remained with ABC News until he retired in 1997 after more than 50-years in television. During his career David Brinkley received 10-Emmy Awards, 3-Peabody Awards, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In retirement, David Brinkley lived in Houston, Texas where he died on June 11, 2003, David Brinkley is buried the Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington, North Carolina.

David Brinkley was born on July 10, 1920 in Wilmington, North Carolina. He developed an early interest in journalism and began his career writing for the Wilmington Morning Star Newspaper while still attending high school. Upon graduating from high school he attended the University of North Carolina, Emory University and Vanderbilt before entering the army in 1941. Upon completing his military service in 1943 Brinkley moved to Washington, D. C. and took a radio job at NBC News. His long and distinguished television career began in 1952 when he moved from NBC Radio and started contributing to NBC News. In 1956, as part of their TV coverage of the National Political Conventions, the Network paired him with Chet Huntley. The two were so successful that on October 29, 1956 the Huntley-Brinkley Report debuted as the primary evening news broadcast for the network. The Huntley – Brinkley Report was so successful that it remained on the air until Chet Huntley retired on July 31, 1970. The program was renamed “The NBC Nightly News.” Brinkley continued to work for NBC News in various roles until 1981 when he departed for ABC News where he hosted the popular Sunday Morning News show, “This Week with David Brinkley.” “This Week” remained on the air until Brinkley entered semi-retirement in 1996. He continued to provide commentary for the network until her fully retired in 1997 and moved to Houston, Texas. During his more than 50-year in Television, David Brinkley received 10-Emmy Awards, three Peabody Awards and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. David Brinkley died on June 11, 2003 at his home in Houston. He is buried beside of his parents in the Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington, North Carolina.
