Nick is sent to Whitby undercover to investigate smuggling. Alf is in Whitby on a fishing holiday, and reluctantly agrees to take Nick with him. A key lead is Cedric Shanks, a poker chum of Alfs, who runs a trawler. On investigation Nick finds out that Cedric’s trawler is picking up canisters of forged money out at sea. Nick manages to get Cedric to use some of the money to pay off his gambling debts.
Nick and Alf are staying with Mrs Stirling. Her son, Jake, has a pregnant girlfriend and he takes on a job on Cedric’s trawler to help them get married. Nick now has to catch Cedric without getting Jake into trouble.
