The former castle Amöneburg lies on a basalt cone that can be seen from a great distance. Near the basalt cone lies the small river "Ohm". The Celts called the Ohm "Amana" and thus came the name of the castle: Amanaburg > Amöneburg.
The Amöneburg existed already in the Merovingian time and served Boniface, the Apostle of the Germans, as the site for the evangelization of Upper Hesse in 721.
The Amöneburg was the scene of several armed clashes, so that the seriously affected fortification was finally demolished in 1839.
Today the remains of residential buildings and parts of the city wall are still visible.
