Itasca State Park, known as the Headwaters of the Mississippi River is the first state park developed in the state of Minnesota. It has numerous rustic buildings constructed from log and stone between 1905 and 1942. One of the most impressive buildings is the Douglas Lodge which has a sign signifying that it is on the National Register of Historic Places. The lodge, built in 1905, is still being used as an inn with a restaurant and a lobby with a striking fireplace made from native rock. Other features that make this park notable are the remains of historic settlements, log cabins, a pioneer cemetery, Woodland Indian burial mounds, and a history that dates back to Zebulon Pike.
