In Boston, near the Arnold Arboretum, is this millstone half buried in the ground near the foundation of the Bussey Mansion.
Arnold Arboretum is located near the Jamaica Plain neighborhood and along the Arborway. Parking is street-side, only - no lot inside the property. Please be careful parking and getting out of your car on the road. There are many entrances, but the main entrance is off the Arborway. There is a visitor center in the Hunnewell Building there. Get a map and walk along the path along the eastern edge of the park. The millstone is in a grassy area near a foundation outline.
The millstone is set in the ground, flat face up. The grooves are visible. The center has been cemented in.
A land management plan by the Arnold Arboretum states that the foundation was an outbuilding for the Bussey Mansion which once was situated further up the hill. The outbuilding was torn down in 1940, and the millstone was used to cover an old well. It is likely that there wasn't a mill at this spot - there wouldn't have been much water from the hill.
