Roland Michell, an American scholar, finds a pair of love letters written between two Victorian poets, Randolph Ash and Christabel LaMotte. He decides to trace the writer and recipient of the letters. It turns out that the couple were both poets and lovers.
Michell enlists the help of Dr Maud Bailey, an expert on the female Victorian poet, in researching the Victorian couple. Slowly Michell and Bailey follow in the footsteps of the two Victorian poets and slowly form a relationship of their own. To add a complication to the story, an academic rival, Fergus Wolfe is also researching the Victorian couple. Wolfe digs up a Victorian grave in his search for further letters, but is foiled by Michell and Bailey.
