DI Frost looks into the case of a student, Helen Tudor, who has been pushed downstairs at University. At first, attention is directed at her lecherous tutor, Dr Michaelson. Later, however, Frost is made aware of the similarity between Helen and another student, Paula, who drowned at an outdoor swimming pool in Boxborough.
Frost goes to Boxborough and seeks the assistance from DS Clive Barnard in Boxborough. They find that some of Helen’s former students are from the area. In particular, Frost interviews the mother of Tony Jarvis, a swimming friend of Helen Tudor. He learns from Mrs Jarvis that Tony’s sister drowned a few years earlier. Whilst Tony Jarvis was at Hull University when Paula died, Frost later finds that he was actually on a field study in Boxborough.
Things come to a head at the university. Frost works out that Tony could have killed Paula. He also gets Mrs Jarvis to confess that she saw Tony drown his sister. Frost races to the university pool, just in time to stop Jarvis trying to drown Helen.
