The Throssell Emporium, ( also known as "The Big Store") was established in 1862 and was central to the economy of Northam at that time. The building had large cellars and was the first building in the district to have local iron veranda posts and lacework. The building in the Victorian Free Classical style, was sited here to take advantage of the many hopeful diggers who passed through on their way to Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie many of whom bought their supplies in Northam. George Throssell became Premier of Western Australia in 1901
