Henry Dodge lives with his mother, stepfather Bill and grandmother. He is a troubled lad that misses his father, killed in the war. When his father’s medal for bravery arrives, Henry takes an interest in finding out about his father’s death.

At school Henry is encouraged by his teacher, Mrs Beaumont, to do a project using photography. Mrs Beaumont also tries to get Henry to have more sympathy for one of his classmates, Paul Jeffries, who is the son of a deserter and ostracised. She puts Henry, Paul and a girl called Grace in charge of a photographic project on cinema. Whilst researching the project Henry finds out that Paul’s father killed his father.

A man introduces himself to Henry as his father. His grandmother confirms the man to be his father. This raises the question about who is in his father’s grave. Mrs Beaumont brings the police in. It turns out that Paul’s father is in the grave. He wasn’t a deserter, but killed by Henry’s father.
