John George Haig was the son of Plymouth Brethren parents. During the war he impersonated ARP wardens in order to steal goods, for which he was eventually imprisoned. On his release he courts a rich man’s daughter, Gillian Rogers, and sets himself up as a designer and inventor.

In London he is befriended by the McSwans, friends of the family. The McSwans are landlords and keep plenty of cash. Haig convinces the son to do a runner to avoid call up. Haig lures the son to the basement and murders him. Haig goes to Scotland as McSwan and hires a lawyer to act as his power of attorney in the sale of houses. BaCK IN London he lures the senior McSwans to his basement and murders them. All the McSwans are disposed of in acid whilst Haig cashes in their property portfolio.

The proceeds from the McSwan murders allows Haig to live at the Onslow Hotel. There he befriends Dr Henderson and his wife. Mrs Henderson is wealthy and Haig soon murders the pair. Unfortunately Mrs Henderson’s brother has his suspicions. Haig throws him off the scent by saying they had to flee to South Africa after the Doctor botched an abortion.

Haig is now living the high life and has a garage in which he disposes of the bodies. His final victim turns out to be his undoing. He murders a fellow hotel guest, Mrs Olive Durand Deacon. Her friend is concerned about her disappearance and gets Haig to go to the police station with her. This leads to a press article, with photo, of Haig. Mrs Henderson’s brother sees the article and contacts the police. Haig is arrested. Unfortunately for him Mrs Deacon’s gall stones did not dissolve in acid and were used as evidence. Haig was sentenced to hang. Gillian Rogers stayed loyal to him to the end.
