The equestrian statue of Karl X Gustav shows the king in a traditional uniform with helmet and baton. The king’s most important military achievements, such as “The March across Great Belt 1658” and “Warchau 1656”, are inscribed on the plinth designed by the museum’s own architect Isak Gustaf Clason. The commission was initiated by a collection in the early 1900s aimed at creating a memorial to the peace at Roskilde. The bronze statue of the King was made by Gustaf Malmquis and in 1917 it was dedicated in front of Nordiska museet (Nordic Museum) located on Djurgården, an island in central Stockholm.
Karl X Gustav (Charles X Gustav of Sweden) (born 1622- died 1660)
was King of Sweden (1654-1660). He was a nephew of Gustav II Adolf, he failed in his efforts to marry the Swedish queen Christina, but she named him to succeed her. As king he attempted to restore the public finances but was forced to devote most of his attention to military matters. He conducted the First Northern War (1655-1660) against a coalition that eventually included Poland, Russia, Brandenburg, the Netherlands, and Denmark, with the aim of establishing a unified northern state. After conquering Poland (1655-1656), he won back lands in southern Sweden from Denmark by the Treaty of Roskilde (1658).
