"An diesem Standort wurde schon 1731 Getreide gemahlen. Da dann durch die erfolgte umliegende Bebauung der Mühle „der Wind genommen“ wurde, entschloss sich Müllermeister Hermann Knoop 1858 zum Neubau. Der fünfstöckige Galerie-Holländer hat eine Höhe von 28,70 m. Die heutigen vier Jalousieflügel haben einen Flügeldurchmesser von ca. 24 m. Bis 1931 wurde die Mühle betrieben. Die Sethesche Stiftung, ein Fräuleinstift, verhinderte 1932 den drohenden Abriss, indem sie die Mühle ankaufte.
Von daher hat die Mühle auch ihren Namen „Stiftsmühle“. Bis 1968 wurde die Mühle als Getreidemühle betrieben. 1977 eröffnete der Heimatverein Aurich e.V. nach erfolgter grundlegender Renovierung auf den fünf Böden der Mühle ein Mühlenfachmuseum. Da die Mühlentechnik noch vorhanden und funktionsfähig ist, können die Besucher jeweils zwei Feinmehlgänge, Schrotgänge und Walzenstühle bestaunen." (Quelle: (

This mill from 1858 is located near the historic city center of Aurich. The mill is functional and there is a museum available with a small cafe.
